LOL - thanks Scott!

Well. This is very enlightening. I just looked through my 915 inlinks on yahoo and all I can say is "UGH!". That matchingtracksuits site must have a bug on their page or something that causes my domain to be linked to in their template or something. Very strange. I guess I should contact them - my domain doesn't even show up in their source code though???!??!!

So I tried something else here - I googled - "Affiliate Marketing Tips" toolbar - to see what came up (that's what I called it). Sure enough, there are a number of sites that carry it. Some have nofollow links pointing to me, and others don't. Looks like at least some of them are trying to keep the google juice from leaking out.

In regards to actual downloads, I never honestly expected very much from that, given the nature of the software, and I was surprised the other day when I checked it to find 2 downloads (yes, you can monitor them). Far more than I ever expected (lol). Probably some other affiliate marketers looking for ideas for their own toolbar, is my guess.

The catalyst for the initial post was the fact that when I initially tried this method, the only thing I had done recently (or at all, for that matter) was make a couple of comments on other blogs. 30 min backlinks was pretty much the only link building effort I put out at the time, and I watched the numbers rise quite dramatically in the few days immediately following that work. I never checked the actual links (hindsight is 20/20) to see which domains were linking in.

I just did the backlink thing for digitalframeguy.com yesterday, and I just checked the link tool. So far I've got one software site (www.softviewer.com/download_detail.php?softid=76091) linking to the domain, and it doesn't use my keyword phrase in the link. (See the links line).

I'll keep a close eye on this in the next few days to see what happens. I wonder how my choice of directories affects my results? I basically took the low hanging fruit from the free submission tools; perhaps actually paying for a submission tool would improve my results by getting me into better directories. Might be interesting to test.

Cheers

Hi Jonathan

Thanks for your response. Well, at the risk of seeming like I have plenty of time on my hands lol, I did a quick link check.

Here's what I found using http://tools.marketleap.com/publinkpop/

www.jonathanboettcher.com
indexed: g = 6, y = 6, msn = 0

jonathanboettcher.com
indexed: g = ~62, y = ~89, msn = 1

MSN can be a pain and you may want to submit your site at least to MSN via something like http://search.live.com/docs/submit.aspx?FORM=SUNO

In terms of backlinks:
www.jonathanboettcher.com
g = 5, y = ~371 of which I only saw about 6 links from software sites

jonathanboettcher.com
g = 5, y = ~917 of which NONE seem to be from software sites

Keep in mind, I only used marketleap's tool. My question is, do you have any idea how many people have downloaded your toolbar and / or do you know if you get any traffic from your toolbar/programme?

I ask because if the link love is weak but traffic is arriving from people who install the toolbar then maybe this technique could work.

Can you monitor who downloads and if any traffic comes from the toolbar or whatever program you submitted?

Thanks again

Hi Scott, thanks for the excellent question. It is a bit misleading isn't it?

Yes, I would still recommend 30 minute backlinks. The problem with this site is that for a long time (unknowingly) I had a setting turned on in Wordpress that caused all traffic to redirect from http://jonathanboettcher.com to http://jonathanboettcher.com. Somehow that managed to split the inbound links. I'm working on a way to combine all the inbound links under the www. but I think it will take time.

To get a more accurate picture, go to your link checker tool and run BOTH the links above (with www and then without). Last time I checked I think I had 250+ on one and 800 or so on the other. (Just re-read your question and realized I hadn't checked how many links come from software sites... I'll have to do that).

So in short, yes I believe it does work, and I think it is a good way to get backlinks. I've just done the same process for another of my sites; in a week or so perhaps I will post on my results from that as well.

Having just come from my analytics account, I can tell you that in the last month 68% of my traffic has come through search engines (versus referral or direct), so I think they're being fair to me. Unfortunately, nearly all of that is from Google, so I have yet to really crack into Yahoo/MSN. Any suggestions?

Hi Jonathan

Just found out about 30 minute backlinks today and wanted to know what you think about the product now? I checked your backlinks (to this blog) and I only see a few backlinks from software sites.

I could be wrong but looks like the major SE's aren't giving you much link love.

Would you still recommend this product? If so, why?

Cheers
